Pictogram 5.o at UID

Fall 2007 Term Project - 2007 to 2008

Go to another project:

Pictogram 5.0 was my first term-project at UID. It was the result of ten weeks of work sponsored by SIT (Special Needs Education Institute of Sweden). The project focus was the use of pictograms as the primary means of communication in computer and mobile devices. For a detailed view at my work, please download the report (link below).

Redesigned pictograms

Pictograms are widely used as a (often primary) communication tool by people with cognitive disabilities.

After an audit of the current library of images that form the existing vocabulary in the Pictogram System, I saw room for improvement and chose to focus on evolving the visual expression of those pictograms. My effort could help improve both printed and digital uses of the language.

Topics
My proposal covers a wide range of details that compose the visual manifestation of individual pictograms and aims to provide guidelines for their use.

Shape, size, line attributes, spacing and typography (to name a few) are some of the topics covered.

Research
The early part of the project included group visits to schools and work homes for people with cognitive disabilites, and interviews with subject matter experts – teachers, and advisors.

There were useful group brainstorming sessions where students were able to contribute ideas to each others' projects.
